Billion Dollar Art Heist - 9/12/11

Hi people,

David has offered a documentary to be discussed. It looks interesting but is 1.5 hours so I thought maybe it could be considered for the 9th december meeting to give people enough time to view it. It is available on BBC iplayer from here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0179w3m/Storyville_20112012_The_Billion_Dollar_Art_Heist/ and will be available until the 11th which fits nicely.

See you there.

Aboriginal originals (plus bonus reflecting pools) - Emily Kame Kngwarreye and the Deconstrucible Space of Justice by Rex Butler for 25/11/11

Hello,

Thank you to those who were able to come to the inaugural meeting of the theory discussion group. I thought it went very well.

Firstly (and slightly self consciously) I would like to propose a name change, not least because 'theory discussion group' is a bit of a mouthful. I would like to suggest 'Friday R&D' the R&D standing for 'reading and discussion' or 'research and development' as you prefer

For this friday (25th) I am proposing the attached essay by a chap called Rex Butler. It talks about the work of the aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye (I have no idea how to pronounce that) and considers the issues involved in applying western european perspectives to non western european art. I found it a bit heavy in places but I enjoyed what I did understand and I hope you will to.

Amanda points out that there is an opening in the Telfer Gallery on Friday at 7pm which would be a good thing to go to. We could hold the discussion elsewhere in the studios to avoid getting in the way and it would give us a useful stop point. 2 hours should be plenty.

Looking forward to it.

Will
